Summer Reading Magicians Impossible to keep your children reading right through summer and beyond? So you think it is really difficult to keep your kids reading through summer and beyond? I don’t blame you because even if it wasn’t summer, getting children to read is no easy task these days. What with the distractions including computer games that are everywhere, even in cell phones. However if you make a plan and stick to it you can achieve virtually anything including getting your children to be voracious readers. A good place to start is at the local library. Find out what their summer program is. You can also select the kind of books that your children would be interested in. You just need to give the library a bit of information including the age of your kids and their interests. The first thing that comes to mind is fiction but you should also keep the nonfiction section in the library on your mind. Most children will love reading both fiction and nonfiction if you get the right books for them. Some kids are more interested in animal stories others science and especially topics like space rockets and how to make miniature ones. Yet other kids would love books which show them how to do stuff, like drawing, juggling, gardening and so on. Just take the time to find stuff that would be of interest to your child and you will be surprised at just how quickly you will be able to turn them into avid and voracious readers. Once you have done all your research and selected the books that will interest them the next step is to motivate your child. For starters you can read them aloud an interesting story every day. There is nothing to stop you alternating this with the other non fiction books that would be of interest. Read those out loud too. This would help them in improving their listening as well as vocabulary skills and help them get more enthusiastic about reading for themselves. Magicians have also been very successful in inspiring children to read. You do not need to wait for your child’s birthday to invite a magician to perform. You can create any excuse for a party and invite a magician to instill the values you want in your children. This will work much better than cajoling or pushing your children to read books. © 2012
