How to choose the right summer camp for your kids

The stats are staggering because it is said that over 10 million kids attend summer camp every year. And while summer camps are part of growing up for our children as parents we should ensure that our kids not only go to the right summer camps but that their safety and health is not endangered in any way.

It is also true that some parents get a huge problem getting their children to think of the idea of being away from home. They just get really homesick and the whole thing ends up not being the fun it should be.

Choosing the right summer camp to send your kids to starts with you knowing them pretty well. It should be appreciated at all times that children are different and tend to have different interests, likes and dislikes.

Now in the old days all camps were more or less identical and were recreational in nature with no specialty themes. But camps have changed a great deal and today we have many different types of camps like music, arts, sports, nature and computers to name a few. And so while one of your kids would be over the moon about attending a sports camp, yet another would get totally bored and homesick unless they attended a camp that has to do with computers.

So it must start with you understanding the interests of your child and doing your own research to ensure that the camp you send them to in the summer is the ideal one for them.

Admittedly there are a number of other factors that you will have to carefully consider before arriving at your decision. For instance you will have to look at the safety aspects of the camp and your budget before arriving at a final decision.

Avoid being too casual about the summer camp you want to send your kid and do a little digging to find out the track record of the organization behind it and also as much as you can about the activities and itinerary. Luckily in this information age this will not be so difficult or time consuming and may involve a visit to one or two websites and a cell phone call or two which can all be done without you getting off your comfortable easy chair.

Open houses are another great feature of camps that you can make full use of. Make a point of going with your kids and asking all the questions you need to ask to be totally satisfied that you have the right camp for them.
