Massachusetts Anti-Bullying
Bullying has become of increasing concern in schools. Students should feel safe in school. If there is the risk of bullying, that safety is compromised. Bullying is widespread in schools and often goes unreported. International research indicates that bullying occurs at all grade levels, but is seen most frequently in elementary schools. Students are often reluctant to report being bullied for fear of retaliation, shame, or making the problem worse. A recent study released by the CDC regarding bullying indicated that 1 in 4 middle grade students in Massachusetts has been bullied. This study is the first of its kind and may be indicative of the prevalence of bullying across the US. Schools in Massachusetts are required to provide methods for investigating reports of bullying as well as preventing retaliation. While laws have been passed to increase efforts to reduce bullying in Massachusetts schools, laws can’t stop the bullying. Schools must make the effort. Finding a school assembly that educates students at a young age can make a difference. Domino the Great offers a school assembly called, Buddies Not Bullies, a program that promotes the principles of respect for each other and positivity. Rather than simply present material, Domino engages the students with storytelling and magic. By offering the message through an amusing medium, the children are more likely to absorb the information and the positive message and recall it when needed. Inspire students to be Buddies Not Bullies by allowing Domino to show them the magic inside of them.
Amazing Magic Tricks: Everyone loves magic. This is an integral part of the program and captures the students’ attention.
Age-Appropriate Humor: The other way to keep students’ interest is to make them laugh. Domino uses jokes throughout his program to keep students engaged in his anti-bullying message.
Real LIfe Examples: To emphasize the powers of friendship, teamwork, and respect, Domino enlists Willie the Worm and Bob the Bully to help him illustrate the power of respect. Hilarious Storytelling: Believe it or not, Domino has a one-of-a-kind personal story about toilet paper that will not only have everyone laughing, they’ll also find a great message in it! Teamwork: One of the greatest keys to respect is teamwork. This is also highlighted in the program and will help students work together effectively in their next group or team assignment!
