Pennsylvania Anti Bullying
Bullying has become of increasing concern in schools. We want students to feel safe in school. If there is the risk of bullying, that feeling may be absent. Bullying is widespread in schools around the world and often goes unreported. International research indicates that bullying occurs at all grade levels, but is seen most frequently in elementary schools. Students are often reluctant to report being bullied for fear of retaliation, shame, or making the problem worse. Often, instances of bullying go unreported. Pennsylvania is, unfortunately, one of the top five states with the highest rates of reported bullying in schools in grades K-12. In an effort to lower this statistic, Pennsylvania is working hard to focus on training staff on how to handle bullying; engaging local community partners to provide information and resources; and classroom discussions, meetings, role-playing, and anti-bullying rule enforcement. Another great way for Pennsylvania schools to offer elementary students information about bullying is via school assembly. Domino the Great offers a magical school assembly called Buddies Not Bullies, a program that promotes the principles of respect for each other and addresses a negative issue – anti-bullying – with a positive tone. Rather than simply talk to the students about rules, Domino engages the students with storytelling and magic. By offering this important message through an entertaining medium, the children are more likely to absorb the information and the positive message and recall it when they need it. Inspire students to be Buddies Not Bullies by allowing Domino to show them the magic inside of them. It will give them a solid foundation on which to build respect for themselves and each other.
Age-Appropriate Humor: The other way to keep students interested is to make them laugh. Domino uses jokes throughout his program to keep students involved and engaged.
Real LIfe Examples: To emphasize the powers of friendship, teamwork, and respect, Domino enlists Willie the Worm and Bob the Bully to help him illustrate the power of respect. Hilarious Storytelling: Believe it or not, Domino has a one-of-a-kind personal story about toilet paper that will not only have everyone laughing; they’ll find an important message in it as well! Teamwork: One of the greatest ways to learn and earn respect is through teamwork. This is also highlighted in the program and will help students work together effectively in their next group or team assignment!
